What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session
Your family photos should feel natural, timeless, and—most importantly—like you! Choosing the right outfits can make a huge difference in how your final images look and feel. Here’s a simple guide to help you put together the perfect wardrobe for your session.
1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans (unless that’s your vibe, then rock it!). Instead, aim for a cohesive color palette with complementary colors and textures. Think earthy tones, pastels, or soft neutrals.
2. Stick to a Color Palette
Choose 3-4 colors that work well together. Some timeless combinations include:
Soft blues, creams, and tans
Earthy greens, warm browns, and neutrals
Muted pastels like blush, lavender, and gray
Deep jewel tones for a richer, moodier look
3. Keep Patterns Subtle
A little pattern is great—too much, and you risk visual chaos. Stripes, florals, and plaids can work beautifully when balanced with solid colors. If one family member is wearing a pattern, keep others in solids or subtle textures.
4. Layer Up!
Layers add depth, movement, and visual interest to photos. Think cardigans, scarves, vests, or a structured jacket—they can be stylish and functional, especially for outdoor sessions in cooler months.
5. Avoid Logos, Graphics & Sequins
Bold logos, cartoon characters, large text, and sequins can be distracting and take away from the classic feel of your photos. Keep things simple and clean.
6. Dress for the Location & Season
Consider your session’s setting—whether it's a beach, a cozy home shoot, or a fall park scene. Flowy dresses for summer, cozy knits for winter, light layers for spring/fall—dress appropriately while maintaining style.
7. Comfort is Key
If you’re uncomfortable, it’ll show in the photos. Make sure clothing is well-fitted but not restrictive, and shoes are comfortable enough for walking (especially for kids!).
8. Consider Textures & Fabrics
Mixing different textures—like linen, knit, denim, or lace—adds warmth and depth. Avoid overly shiny or stiff fabrics, which can look unnatural on camera.
9. Think About Movement
For women and kids, dresses or skirts with a little flow can add beautiful movement. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, especially for little ones who want to run and play.
10. Plan Ahead
Don’t wait until the night before! Lay out outfits in advance, try them on, and make sure everything fits well and looks great together. If in doubt, send me photos for advice—I’m happy to help!
Bonus Tips:
Neutral and earth tones work well in most settings.
Avoid pure white if possible—it can wash out in bright lighting.
Accessories like hats, delicate jewelry, or stylish shoes can elevate your look.
If someone feels strongly about their outfit choice, let them wear it—confidence is key!
Most of all—relax and have fun! The best photos come from real, natural moments, not perfectly curated outfits. Trust me, your smiles and connection matter more than the clothes!
